CHECK-OUT HUNGER® is the most highly visible and far-reaching annual fundraiser for the Feeding America Food Banks across the northeast. It is a joint effort of major grocery retailers and the Food Banks to offer food shoppers an easy way to help those in need in their communities. Retail partners run Check-Out Hunger at varying times from October through January. Campaign placards with $1, $3 and $5 donation slips are placed at every check-out aisle. Customers just choose a donation slip, cashiers scan the UPC and the donation is added to the purchase. The donations raised in each store go to the Food Bank serving that market area. Check-Out Hunger’s importance to the Feeding America Food Banks from Massachusetts through Virginia is best demonstrated by the fact that the 2010 fall/2011 winter campaign raised over $4 million - the most ever - to help fight hunger.

The closure of all but two of Maryland’s SuperFresh stores will have a negative impact on the Check-Out Hunger donations in Maryland this year. However, that loss may be balanced over the next years with the expansion of Wakefern, Wawa and Wegmans in Maryland. They are the three most productive campaign participants in the northeast! As we always say, “We love our W’s!”
