Programs

Feeding America recently published the study Child Food Insecurity in the United States 2005-2007 (link to PDF of study) and estimated that there were over 200,000 children in Maryland who are food insecure.  To top this, 64,000 of those children are five or under.

The Maryland Food Bank strives to combat all types of hunger with programs that target children, seniors living on fixed incomes and hard working adults.  Take a look at our programs below.

Purchased Food Program

The Maryland Food Bank purchases food to supplement the food we receive from the food industry and through community food drives.

DSS Program
The Maryland Food Bank works with the Department of Social Services in Baltimore City to provide people with a box that contains a three day emergency supply of food.

Pantry On The Go / Produce Drops

Our Pantry on the Go Program provides people in rural Maryland with bags of groceries while also giving them information on no-cost healthcare options.  Our Produce Drops regularly drop 7,000 pounds of fresh-produce into low-income communities in Baltimore City.

SNAP Outreach
The Maryland Food Bank's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) outreach is targeted towards all individuals over the age of 54 who may be eligible for food stamps, but are currently not taking advantage of this benefit.

Community Kitchen
Very soon, the Maryland Food Bank will open its Community Kitchen.  Donated food will be prepared, quick frozen and packaged for distribution to network partners.

Youth Programs
From our School Pantry Program, where we offer bags of food to parents who volunteer at their child’s school to our BackPack Programs and Kids Cafe sites, we’ve kept a keen eye on childhood hunger and have innovative programs to help end it.
