  • Key Study Reveals More Marylanders Seeking Emergency Food Assistance
  • A landmark study released today by the Maryland Food Bank and Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, reports that more than 261,000 people in the Maryland Food Bank’s service area receive emergency food each year, an 11 percent increase since 2006. Of those, 71,514 are under the age of 18. The study, Hunger in America 2010, was based on interviews with more than 400 network partner agencies in the Maryland Food Bank’s service area. It is the fifth comprehensive study of hunger in the United States conducted by Feeding America, with the last study completed in 2006.

  • Bruce Springsteen Concert Offers Opportunity to Give Food
  • On Friday, November 20, 2009, Marylanders will welcome Bruce Springsteen to Baltimore for the first time since 1973. The concert at 1st Mariner Arena will also offer concert-goers the opportunity to give to one of Springsteen’s biggest causes: hunger. Springsteen is a member of World Hunger Year’s Artists Against Hunger and Poverty Program, which enlists performing artists to help raise funds and awareness for the most innovative and effective community-based organizations working to combat hunger and poverty. Springsteen has chosen the Maryland Food Bank for his stop in BaltimoreMaryland Food Bank staff and volunteers will be inside and outside the concert collecting canned food and monetary donations throughout the concert.

  • Federal Appropriations Help Food Bank Meet Increased Need
  • Federal omnibus legislation signed by President Obama yesterday provides critical funding for Maryland Food Bank operations. The legislation allocates $492,000 to the food bank and will assist in making improvements to its office spaces, install a new roof at the Maryland Food Bank's 87,000-square-foot distribution center in Baltimore and other capital needs. The Maryland Food Bank has seen an increase in the demand for its services of up to 50 percent in the last year, largely a result of the economic recession.
